Dear Members & Guests,
It’s hard to believe that yet another World Chapter of the Disneyana Fan Club Christmas Event has passed. The Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Mary Poppins Event started with a welcome and acknowledgement of Planning Committee Members and Board by- World Chapter President-Adria Smith. Deborah Spielman, COO for Florida Hospital for Children was introduced and talked about the work Florida Hospital is doing to help terminally ill children through the Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Program. Deborah expressed the hospital’s gratitude to the World Chapter for their donation in the past and hosting this event to continue to support the program. Guests and members enjoyed yet another wonderful holiday buffet, dessert and drinks prepared by the culinary team at the Contemporary Hotel. The menu items were amazing while the culinary team was still able to cater to guests with special dietary needs.
Richard Sherman started the entertainment portion of the evening with a pre-recorded message stating he was sorry he could not attend the event and talked briefly about his career with his brother-Robert Sherman creating the Mary Poppins music. Richard then went on to introduce his son-Gregg Sherman and nephew- Jeff Sherman to the audience. Gregg & Jeff Sherman shared stories about their childhood growing up with famous fathers as well as movie clips from their documentary “The Boys, The Sherman Brothers Story.” Juliana Hansen sang several Mary Poppins songs with Victoria Shultz accompanying on piano. One of the most memorable songs was “Feed the Birds” followed by a sing-a-long to “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” with children entering the ballroom flying kites. Juliana’s voice is crystal clear reminiscent of Julie Andrews. It was easy to see why Richard Sherman handpicked Juliana to perform songs for the Mary Poppins Legacy Collection-a group of songs some originally cut from Mary Poppins. The proceeds from the Silent and Live Auction coupled with the generous donation of CDs from Juliana Hansen, DVDs donated by Gregg and Jeff Sherman and autographed by Richard Sherman will allow us to present the Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Program at Florida Hospital with a $10,000 donation again this year. The check will be presented sometime in the early part of January.
The World Chapter plans to continue its support of the Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Program at Florida Hospital with future events such as “An Afternoon with Robbie Sherman” coming up on March 15, 2015 at Howl at the Moon.
